Custom Pet Portraits
Our pets are not just animals. They become part of our family. We play with and care for them daily. They miss us when we have to leave them and show unbridled joy when we return. We laugh at them. We cry over them.
Our pets capture a special place in our hearts.
Custom pet portraits preserve that special place for generations to come.

How I Draw
I use quality, archival materials in all of my charcoal drawings so that your investment will last. I begin by mapping out a grid with vine charcoal to lay out the special landmarks that will help me keep the proportions and perspective aligned. I then begin to lightly fill in the dark areas with the vine charcoal which serves as the foundation of the drawing similar to a painter's underpainting. Then begins the dance of making marks with charcoal pencil, smudging those marks with a blending stump, and erasing to create a pleasing contrast and texture. You may have seen other artist draw in such a way that they complete one section of a drawing before moving to another. I do not. I draw as a painter typically paints moving the whole image to completion at the same time. I find this helps to keep unison within the image. When the dance concludes a fixative is applied to preserve the image. I then sign with waterproof ink.
The Commission Process
When you are ready to book a pet portrait commission contact me via the contact form. Then we will discuss reference photos, availability, size of the portrait, and timing via email. For tips on finding or capturing quality reference photos please click the button at the bottom of this page.
Once these have been confirmed I will collect a nonrefundable deposit of 50% to book the portrait. I will email progress pictures while working to show how your commission is coming together, though it may look odd during the early stages. I like to post my progress on social media but if the commission is a gift or surprise I’ll wait until after delivery. Once the drawing is started only two major changes can be afforded early on due to the nature of drawing with charcoal. I follow the reference photo’s closely and might be able to make a few small changes throughout the process however if multiple changes are required an extra fee may apply.
Once the drawing is finished I will email a final picture for your approval then I will collect the remaining 50% plus shipping. Sales tax is applied on each transaction for residents of Alabama only. Your special portrait will then be secured within sturdy packaging and shipped to you promptly.
